Ian Keable, winner of The Magic Circle’s prestigious Comedy Award, performs the favourite magic tricks of Charles Dickens and divulges the spooky practices of Victorian psychics.

Charles Dickens was an expert amateur conjurer.  He was also sceptical about Spiritualism, which was a popular Victorian pastime amongst many of his friends.  Ian brings alive these two fascinating facets of the great writer with reference to his books, letters and articles.

The first half considers who the contemporary conjurers Dickens saw, why he took up magic, what his friends thought of him as a magician, what sort of tricks he performed and why he eventually moved onto other areas of interest.  

The second half looks at the 18th century story of the Cock Lane Ghost, a precursor to Spiritualism, and how that had an effect on Dickens’s attitude to séances and mediums generally.  Spiritualist tricks of this era, some of which Dickens witnessed himself, are re-created – culminating in a rarely seen Spirit Painting illusion.

So alongside intriguing insights, Marvels and Mystery abound - all topped up with plenty of Mirth: the result is a show that will appeal to everybody - even if you’ve never read a word of Dickens!
